Can azulene-like molecules function as substitution-free molecular rectifiers?

چکیده
The feasibility of employing azulene-like molecules as a new type of high performance substitution-free molecular rectifier has been explored using NEGF-DFT calculation. The electronic transport behaviors of metal-molecule-metal junctions consisting of various azulene-like dithiol molecules are investigated, which reveals that the azulene-like molecules exhibit high conductance and bias-dependent rectification effects. Among all the substitution-free azulene-like structures, cyclohepta[b]cyclopenta[g]naphthalene exhibits the highest rectification ratio, revealing that the all fused aromatic ring structure and an appropriate separation between the pentagon and heptagon rings are essential for achieving both high conductance and high rectification ratio. The rectification ratio can be increased by substituting the pentagon ring with electron-withdrawing group and/or the heptagon ring with electron donating groups. Further increase of the rectification ratio may also be obtained by lithium adsorption on the pentagon ring. This work reveals that azulene-like molecules may be used as a new class of highly conductive unimolecular rectifiers.

Generation and characterization of highly vibrationally excited molecular beam.
A simple method to generate and characterize a pure highly vibrationally excited azulene molecular beam is demonstrated. Azulene molecules initially excited to the S4 state by 266-nm UV photons reach high vibrationally excited levels of the ground electronic state upon rapid internal conversion from the S4 electronically excited state. VUV laser beams at 157 and 118 nm, respectively, are used t...
متن کاملA Review of the Function of Circulating Cell Free miRNAs as Promising Biomarkers in Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment, and Metastasis
Cell Free miRNAs are small, non-coding molecules that can be secreted into the bloodstream in very stable forms. These types of miRNAs, like intracellular miRNAs, participate in the control of many biological processes and are expressed in both natural and pathological conditions. Quantitative and qualitative changes in expression of circulating miRNAs are associated with the onset and progress...
متن کاملExploring the performance of molecular rectifiers: limitations and factors affecting molecular rectification.
There has been significant work investigating the use of molecules as nanoscale rectifiers in so-called "molecular electronics". However, less attention has been paid to optimizing the design parameters of molecular rectifiers or to their inherent limitations. Here we use a barrier tunneling model to examine the degree of rectification that can be achieved and to provide insight for the design ...
متن کاملSupercollisions and energy transfer of highly vibrationally excited molecules.
Collisional energy-transfer probability distribution functions of highly vibrationally excited molecules and the existence of supercollisions remain as the outstanding questions in the field of intermolecular energy transfer. In this investigation, collisional interactions between ground state Kr atoms and highly vibrationally excited azulene molecules (4.66 eV internal energy) were examined at...
متن کاملFirst Synthesis of 2-heteroarylazulenes by the Electrophilic Substitution of Azulene with Triflate of N-containing Heterocycles
An efficient synthesis of 2-heteroarylazulene derivatives was established via electrophilic substitution. The reaction of 6-dimethylamino-1,3-di(methylthio)azulene (1a) with the triflate of N-containing heteroarenes proceeded in the presence of excess heteroarenes to afford the corresponding 2-dihydroheteroarylazulene derivatives 3−7. The 2-dihydroheteroarylazulene derivatives were readily conv...
